We’ve opened two new speed reviews for State Highway 1 through Rakaia.

Here’s what we’re consulting on:

• a 50km/h speed limit for SH1 Rakaia township from 1 July (or 70km/h by 1 July applies)
• a 60km/h variable speed limit for a proposed Intersection Speed Zone at Weavers Road for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre northbound facility opening soon.

The township speed limit was lowered to 50km/h last year. A new requirement under the Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024 means this speed limit must change to 70km/h by 1 July 2025.

We’re now doing a speed review that will consider safety, technical, cost benefit and other data, alongside community feedback, to determine if we should re-set the speed limit to the lower speed of 50km/h.

We’ve heard the community feedback - now it’s officially time to have your say.

The proposed Intersection Speed Zone is so the CVSC facility we’re opening soon can operate safely. We’re recommending it works like the live Intersection Speed Zone at North Rakaia Road, but on the other side of the road.

Where speed limits are proposed to change because of new road infrastructure like the CVSC, we’re required by the Rule to undertake a targeted speed review and consult with the public.
