Talk it up Tuesday moves to monthly event

Council’s Talk it up Tuesday sessions with the public are moving to once a month.

The sessions at the Ashburton Library are from 1pm-2pm and people can drop by, without an appointment, for an informal chat with an elected councillor. The next sessions will be Tuesday 1 October, Tuesday 5 November and Tuesday 3 December.

Democracy and Engagement Group Manger Toni Durham said the drop-in sessions had been running for more than a year.

“It’s a great chance to talk about a burning issue you’ve got on your mind, or about a great idea that would benefit the district, plus if it’s something that Customer Services can sort out then the Councillors can point them in the right direction.

“We’ve found that fewer people have been dropping by in the past month or so and so we’re reducing the frequency to once a month.”

She said Councillors valued the opportunity to connect with their community.

“We’ve had some good consultations this year that have provided a chance for residents to talk directly with councillors or give their feedback, and the new technology on the Our Place website allows people to ask questions and receive answers, and that has been a success.”

Mrs Durham said residents who wanted to know information about Council facilities or other services could also talk to Council staff.

“It’s an easy as picking up the phone and calling us if you want to know if you need a permit for something, or want to ask questions about a parking fine or keeping bees or poultry on your property.”
