Rehab for roundabouts planned during April
Council contractors will be laying a new and stronger road surface at two Chalmers Avenue roundabouts this month.
From Monday 8 April, the intersection at Moore Street, Chalmers Avenue and Beach Road will be completely closed for a week to allow Fulton Hogan to upgrade the first roundabout.
The road surface will be milled (removed) and a structural asphalt laid in its place.
Group Manager Infrastructure Neil McCann said the road surface at this roundabout was chipsealed in 2011 and so the upgrade next week was timely.
“The thick structural asphalt being laid is designed to better cope with increased traffic volumes and heavy traffic, and the intersection is being completely closed so that the work can be finished quickly because this is a main arterial road.”
Detours and traffic management will be in place, with specific routes for heavy vehicles.
Similar work is planned for the roundabout at the intersection of Chalmers Avenue, Walnut Avenue and Bridge Street, from 29 April.
The cost of the roundabout improvements is $330,000.
