Dromore residents asked to conserve water

Published: 9 January 2024

Residents on the Dromore neighbourhood water supply have been asked to conserve water following high demand on the scheme during yesterday’s hot weather.

The Council-run scheme serves about 40 properties and is for household/domestic use only.

Infrastructure and Open Spaces Group Manager Neil McCann said water was being carted to reservoir tanks at the Dromore Water Treatment Plant today (Tuesday 9 January 2024) to bolster supply.

“Our monitoring showed that the water treatment plant could not keep up with the demand for water yesterday during the hot weather and given that more high temperatures are on the way later this week, we are asking households connected to the Dromore supply to conserve water as much as possible.

“Staff have been visiting households in the supply area and informing them of the conserve water request. This means that water is available for things like showering, washing, flushing the toilet, drinking and food preparation, but people shouldn’t be using it to fill swimming pools, water the lawn or wash the car.”

There is a permanent hosing ban on the Dromore water supply, as well as the Montalto and Methven-Springfield supplies. A hosing ban means no irrigation is allowed (including garden watering).

Council continuously monitors water quantity and quality in all its community schemes.

“It’s usual for demand to spike on really hot days, but we still expect people to be water wise. We need to ensure that water is available to everyone and that supplies last,” Mr McCann said.

“Conserving water can be as easy as taking shorter showers or making sure your home has no leaking taps. It’s something that should be practised throughout the year to make sure water is used wisely.”
