Detour for heavy traffic while part of Chalmers Avenue resealed

Published: 5 January 2023

A section of the northbound lane of Chalmers Avenue, between Walnut Avenue and Grey Street will be closed for at least three days in January, while contractors reseal it from 13 January.

Heavy traffic that would normally pass through that section of Chalmers Avenue will be asked to detour via Beach Road, Trevors Road and Albert Street.

Signs advising of the work will go up on 6 January and the closure will begin 13 January – extra days have been allowed for contingency.

The road was programmed to be resealed due to its age and condition, however this was delayed until the new sewer pipelines were installed under the roadway.

Infrastructure and Open Spaces Group Manager Neil McCann said Council’s roading contractors were making good progress on work all around the district, thanks to some good weather.

“They are collectively making good work on the larger roading programme for this year and that includes repairs, maintenance and reseals. This type of work can only be done in the warmer months and at the rate they are going, we will be almost through the programme by the end of March.”

Council added $1.7m extra to the roading budget this financial year to tackle a larger area of the roading network, which is one of the biggest for territorial authorities in the country.

“Our contractors are also continuing to make good progress on major repairs on Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Ashburton Staveley Road, and are about to begin other jobs on Thompsons Track, Mayfield Valetta Road and Holmes Road,” Mr McCann said.

Details of the road closures and detours are on Council’s website.
