Be a super hero in Road Safety Week
Mid Canterbury school crossing patrollers and safety ambassadors are being encouraged to dress as super heroes on Wednesday 17 May as part of events to celebrate Road Safety Week.
The patrollers can dress as super heroes while they do their morning and afternoon school crossing duties, highlighting the important role they play in road safety. Schools without a crossing might consider encouraging bus monitors to be super heroes.
Residents all over the district are also being encouraged to go yellow for Road Safety Week, which runs from 15 to 21 May.
The lights on Ashburton’s clock tower will glow yellow and residents are being asked to wear yellow or tie a yellow ribbon on their vehicle for the week.
Members of the Ashburton District Road Safety Coordinating Committee met this week at Council and were briefed on road safety education planned for secondary school students and about improvements to some urban intersections.
Road controls at the intersection of Chalmers Avenue, Wellington Street and Havelock Street have been changed from give way to stop signs, with no crashes reported since the change.
Give way signs are also to be installed at the T intersection of Bridge Street and Glassworks Road.
Data from Fire and Emergency New Zealand showed volunteer brigades in the district attended 24 motor vehicle crashes from 1 January to 28 March this year, including one fatal.
