Do you qualify for a rates rebate? Check before the end of June
Ashburton District Council is concerned some low-income ratepayers in the district are missing out on a rates rebate, which could cut up to $665 off their rates bill.
The Government’s rates rebate scheme provides a partial refund for people who pay rates to the council and around 800 people received a rebate for the previous financial year.
Chief Executive Hamish Riach said the deadline for rebates in the current financial year was approaching and ratepayers had until the end of June to apply.
“We are getting down to the last few weeks and encouraging ratepayers who receive superannuation or other Government assistance, or are on low incomes, to check if they meet the income level required to qualify.
“The level for eligibility varies, depending on income, the amount of rates you pay and dependants, so some people might qualify for the full rebate or for a lesser amount. If you’re not sure, then you should call our Customer Services team or drop in to the Council office and find out.
“Covid-19 has caused a few disruptions over the past year and we want to make sure ratepayers who qualify for the rebate know that there is still time to apply.”
As part of the rebate application process, people need to prove their income level with a summary of earnings from the IRD. It must relate to the period 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021.
You must be:
* The person who pays the rates on the property that’s your home
* Living in your home
* Listed as the ratepayer in Council’s rating information database
You cannot apply if:
* Your property is mainly used for commercial activities, such as farming or business
* Your property is a rental property or holiday home
Most retirement village residents, including people who live under a licence to occupy agreement, can apply for a rates rebate.
Even if you already get a rebate, you need to re-apply each year.
