Simple fix keeping rubbish in bins

Published: 16 March 2021

Litter from wheelie bins blowing down the street on windy Mid Canterbury days may soon be a thing of the past thanks to a simple solution being rolled out across the district.

Ashburton District Council has been attaching special straps to residents' rubbish and recycling bins which allows people to clip the lids shut, helping to stop contents being blown out of the bins on windy days.

The straps are specially designed to be undone as the bin is picked up and emptied by the trucks, ensuring collection times remain efficient.

Infrastructure Services Group Manager, Neil McCann says Council has progressively been rolling out the straps in some of the most wind-prone areas, but that eventually all bins will have one.

"We began piloting the attachments in Rakaia last year and found they were around 95 per cent effective at keeping the lids shut on windy days, even when the bin is blown over.

"Since then, we've been prioritising other wind-prone areas and gradually making our way around to everyone. They certainly make a difference for our waste recovery contractor, EnviroWaste and it gives residents a little more peace of mind that their rubbish and recycling will make it into the truck and not down the street when those nor'wester winds are blowing."

Council has been progressively installing the straps to bins on residents' collection days while the bins are at the kerb.
