Mind the sign - changed traffic conditions in Ashburton CBD

Published: 5 March 2021

Shoppers and workers in the Ashburton CBD are being urged to double check signage and street markings on their journeys as streetscape upgrades continue to change access routes in the town centre.

The Council's two-year revitalisation project has seen Burnett and Tancred Streets permanently become one-way only, while the removal of a roundabout has given Havelock Street right-of-way at the Cass Street intersection near the Police station.

The ongoing underground and above ground infrastructure upgrades have also been temporarily impacting vehicle and pedestrian traffic as work is carried out on footpaths and on the road.

Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager, Neil McCann says staff were disappointed to observe several people ignoring signage and putting themselves in dangerous situations.

"We've seen people deliberately open gates put there to stop people getting too close to the work and machinery, or ignoring signs showing them the safest place to walk.

"We know that the new traffic conditions for Burnett, Tancred and Cass Streets is quite a change, which is why it's so important that drivers take care to check the signage before entering the intersections."

Work along the western side of East Street has progressed to Havelock Street and paving around the Burnett Street railway pedestrian crossing is expected to start soon.

This crossing, located next to the public toilets will temporarily close while work is carried out, however the Tancred Street railway crossing at the water feature will be reopened.
