Mid Canterbury farmers looking to correctly dispose of their agri-chemicals and containers are being encouraged to get their name down for the Agrecovery farm recycling day coming to Rakaia in November.

Agrecovery, in partnership with the Ashburton District Council is hosting the event on 11 November and all participants need to register their interest by Wednesday 4 November.

The farm recycling One Stop Shop will allow producers to drop off their unused agri-chemicals; chemical containers; drums; used motor oil; as well as seed, feed and fertiliser bags.

Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann says the initiative is a safe and sustainable method of disposing of chemicals and containers that are piling up on the farm.

"We're increasingly seeing more and more people wanting to dispose of these kinds of materials properly and the Agrecovery One Stop Shop facilitates this," he says.

“Agriculture is our district's biggest industry and we are pleased to be hosting this event alongside the team from Agrecovery. Make sure you register your interest as early as possible to participate."

Agrecovery reports that across six One Stop Shop events in 2019, more than 37,000 kilograms of fertiliser bags, 12,065 kilograms of chemicals and 8,500 kilograms of chemical containers were dropped off. With nine events scheduled throughout Canterbury this year, the group is expecting collection totals to be even higher than last.

Events are carefully managed with attendance limited, so farmers and growers that want to be involved must register. Following registration, Agrecovery will share information about timing and waste preparation.
