About the event

At this special lunchtime artist talk, Dr. Jane Venis will discuss her new exhibition Pāua Play, introducing some history of the use and misuse of both paūa shell and the ukulele in Aotearoa and the wider Pacific. There will be an emphasis on exploring the history, background, and development of her contemporary instruments.

She will discuss how concepts of both Kitsch and Kiwiana have been influential in the development of the works. As part of the presentation Jane will introduce visitors to some of her earlier sculptural instruments that led to the development of the works in Pāua Play.
